Rhododendron Leafhopper Not As Cute As It Looks

While visiting Roan Mountain State Park, I found the rosebay rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) blooming beautifully. Naturally, I started snapping a few photos. When I got home and started labeling the pictures, I spied this little rhododendron leafhopper (Graphocephala fennahi) inside one of the flowers. “How cute and colorful!” I thought to myself at first. Then, I learned that they eat rhododendron sap and can spread a fungus that damages the rhododendrons. Not all that is cute is good. (I actually found that out in high school.)
